This is a review text on endometriosis and its epidemiology, pathogenesis, genetics and treatment. Specifically, it includes sub-topics on its immunologic effects and its impact on fertility and pelvic pain. It is edited by well-known and respected physicians who have assembled a strong group of chapter authors. The topics also include investigative areas in the disease that may improve its characterization and treatment. Particular attention has been paid to research breakthroughs in the pathogenesis of endometriosis.

The editors’ goals for this text appear to present it as a clinical and research resource. They have been adequately met and the research components make the text unique and useful. It does also have clinical utility. Many of the chapters are written by expert clinicians with great experience in the treatment and clinical research of endometriosis. In that regard the chapters by Drs. Barbieri, Surrey and Germayer/Guidice stand out. The last three chapters are particularly useful for clinicians treating infertile women with the disease.

As above the unique aspect of this text is the great attention paid to the most current and solid research data, both basic and clinical, on the disease. The chapter on animal models, immunologic aspects and aromatase inhibitors are worthy of being lead review articles in the major journals of our specialty. The references are excellent. Overall I see this text as especially useful in a library setting for medical students/residents through to faculty, and individually for fellows and faculty/clinicians who are actively treating endometriosis patients with infertility and/or pelvic pain.
